Characteristics of the series:
This two volume series is designed for students who have to acquire basic knowledge of Materials Science and the Testing of Materials in the course of their technical science studies.
Such a far-reaching claim requires a broad source of information so that each student can select his particular subject-matter.
The wide range of subjects offered the option of including the latest research results as well as mod-ern technical applications (see 10.). As such, a self-contained presentation can assist draw attention to the relevance of Materials Science for innovative key technologies.
Despite the technical variety the volume of the primary subject has been compressed to some 400 pages (for each volume). Further, additional pages with a great number of illustrations and arithmical examples emphasize the clarity the syllabus is offered with.
Most of the 17 short appendices (Deepend Compounds and Important Border-Fields) have been writ-ten by experts of the individual subjects. The y present additional secondary teaching material and serve to deepen as well as broaden the primary knowledge through insight into the related fields of Material Science and the Testing of Materials. The student can decide for himself how far he wishes to follow the supplement or, in other words, how far he wishes to go beyond the primary lecture (red thread).
Volume I.1 deals with the basics of the development of solids and the dominant properties of crystalline of amorphous materials. A short insight into based materials terminates this introduction which is important for all students of technical subjects.
Volume I.2 is dedicated to non-iron metals, followed by compact studies of the electric and mag-netic properties of solids. Furthermore, the presentation of modern methods of thin-layer-technologies (the transformation of and application) offers yet another important component of ba-sic knowledge for students of mechanical engineering, materials science, electrotechnology and physics.
Volume II.1 covers the methods of testing materials very thoroughly. Due to their relevance the mechanical (destructive) methods have only been covered briefly whereas a lot more space has been dedicated to the modern methods of non-destructive testing. It presents all major non-destructive as well as optical processes which have recently gained importance. These topics are suitable for students in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and physics, and basically for all students who will need to apply these modern non-destructive methods in their future professional life. Only non-destructive testing methods assure a fast, non-contact automated production and quality control.
Volume II.2 continues with the explanation of abrasion, fatigue and residual stress of materials. This provides the basics to extensively establish the strength criteria of (metallic) materials. This Volume is dedicated to students of mechanical engineering, materials science and (solid state) physics.
All together the two volumes specifically offer the basics of materials science and the testing of mate-rials. Furthermore, the latest research results and applications have been included to highlight the continually progressing developments in the field of materials science. Following the principles of the text this has been achieved with a simple user-friendly method. All through the text the series these topics and concepts have been explained: glass ceramics, metallic glasses, carbon fibres, shape-memory alloys, liquid crystals, SQUID-sensors, holographic interferometers, laser technology, finite element method and others.

The author has experienced good results with American textbooks and this is well documented in the relevant book quotations within the listed index of literature. Amongst other things the prag-matic style of standard American textbooks of materials science is referred to. It is therefore justi-fied to assume that the translated series will have a chance of success on the English speaking market.
